Today we became North Carolina home owners.
It’s been a long journey and I haven’t had much time to blog about it.
It was a crazy time period and very busy for me. Overall, I visited Raleigh four weekends before moving here. The first trip was with Eric and our daughters. The second time was with a friend. Then it was with Eric and I again and we found the house! Finally a friend came with me for the home inspection.
It was much harder than I thought to buy a house in a brand new area.
But in the end, we found a home we LOVE! We did not get the “land” that my husband was aiming for. In fact, we bought on the smallest lot of land that we saw the entire time. It is much smaller than our former yard. And this was the concession we took for a house that we love in a neighborhood filled with kids.
And best of all, it was significantly less expensive than our house up north! We stayed well below budget! This is HUGE for us. One of our goals in moving south was to have less “tight” of a budget. Larger and newer for less money. Good stuff.
So come on in to my poorly taken iPhone photos of my lovely new abode…
Yep, four kids now come with the place. And here they are entering for the first time into this house as their HOME!
As you walk in, we have the living/dining area.
You can see the kitchen in the back right…so let’s step around the corner and have a peek. I have to admit that I love the spacious kitchen. And I LOVE the natural light in this house. One thing my former home lacked was natural lighting, so this home feels so airy and bright!
The back door leads to the deck.
Here is the family room. (I am standing in the kitchen) T is there with her new pillow for her bedroom! Each of the kids picked one of these out at Target today. Their other ones were filled with spots and stains, so we got rid of them before moving.
Again….LOVE the light from the windows. So. Much. Natural sunshine!
Around the corner are the French doors to the “office” which will be our school room:
Let’s go on upstairs. I really love this spacious hallway. And that room at the end – it is the laundry room! Woo hoo for upstairs laundry!
It’s a bit blurry, but this is the area outside of the girls room. It’s a fun little spot and I am already wondering what we’ll do with it for them! (Overlooks the front entrance)
My bathroom. I LOVE this bathroom. It is SO. MUCH. ROOMIER. than my former bathroom.
Double sinks rock.
There is a nice spacious closet (left most door) and then a linen closet (center door) and then a separate room for the toilet (right hand door).
My bedroom (I am standing in the bathroom) has a pretty trey ceiling – pretty popular in the south.
Girls playroom (4th bedroom)
Boys bedroom…we will be moving the cute chandelier to the girls room!
SIDEBAR question….what do folks call those pillows like the one you see in highlighter yellow in the above photo? I call them “husbands” because that is what my mom called them.
It’s a husband pillow. But does anyone else call them that?
Ok, on to the upstairs hall bathroom, which connects to the girls’ bedroom and the upstairs hallway. They have double sinks, which is very helpful!
I am standing in a separate area for the shower and toilet. I’d like to get some sort of door there because I think that will be very useful with 4 kids sharing a bathroom in the future!
And this house has a BASEMENT! Yep, they exist, even in the south!
For any southerners reading this…the basement is a level in your home that is BELOW the first floor. It is BELOW the ground. And it is great for kids, storage, mess and cooler temperatures in the summer!
Let’s head down…
At the bottom of the stairs is a nice little finished room that was intended for exercise. There is a section of the wall built out for a TV behind me.
We are giving this piece of equipment to a friend as it is HUGE and takes up the whole room! But my treadmill will go here and perhaps a table for Kayleigh’s jewelry making? Or a table for puzzles and board games? There is a nice storage closet for games and “stuff” on the back wall!
OK, believe it or not, the two areas of the house that were MOST EXCITING to us were these two unfinished areas.
It is so impossible to find UNFINISHED basement areas down south. Basements are hard enough to come by, but ones with some decent unfinished area are even more rare.
This room will be PERFECT for Eric’s potter’s wheel! A nice little art studio for him to work and get messy. He’ll probably have a utility sink put in at some point.
Across the hall is another unfinished area. I was going to put my treadmill here, but the kids are excited to claim this area. They are using the small area under the stairs for “Girl Island II” and the boys get the larger section.
Girl Island II under the stairs…
The boys area will be here and they will share it with some of my storage bins.
Across the hall is the bathroom. I don’t have a picture of it, but it is a lovely bathroom, complete with tub.
At the end of the hall is our “media room” which made me VERY excited when we saw the house. I could picture my four teenagers enjoying this space one day!
On one end is the wet bar area. There is a small fridge behind the bar and a sink.
And if you stand behind the bar, this is the rest of the room. They love it already!
Finally, there is a small guest room! So visitors are welcome!!!! (HINT HINT)
Outside the kitchen is the deck.
The patio is really lovely! It is below and I suspect the bump out is for a fire pit and we will certainly be buying something for outdoor fires!
The yards in the neighborhood aren’t large, but the ground is flat and there is enough room for a trampoline sometime soon!
It’ll feel good to set up our home! The movers come on Saturday and a friend arrives that afternoon to help me unpack!
Not sure how much blogging I’ll do next week, but I’ll try.
