C (23 months old) does not pronounce the "d" sound at the beginning of words...

C's word: Man-uel
Real word: Daniel

C's word: Nanimal
Real word: Danimal

C's word: Navid
Real word: David
___________________________________________

C's favorite question is "Wah happen?" He asks this over and over and over in the same minute, so there really isn't a good answer.
___________________________________________

C's word: Wach Is
Real Word: Watch This

And I hear this all day long. It is often followed by something really silly, like C taking his hand and moving it quickly through the air. Other times he making a hoping movement. Or he'll move something around really quickly. He LOVES this game.

D (age 4) was talking to his little brother, C (age almost 2):

D: You get to be one, then two, then three, and then you get to hit and do lots of things.

Me: (hearing that at three you get to hit) You get to what?

D: Hit. That's what I did when I was three.

*Lovely. Now hitting people is something to look forward to!

D (age 4) was sitting with the girls and they were all spelling words:

D: ADWA. That's spells "lots and lots of trucks".

K (age 8): If I win a million dollars, it would be great.
Dad: What would you do with a million dollars?
K: I would buy anything I want.
Dad: What would you buy first?
K: I would go to McDonald's!
Dad: Why McDonald's?
K: Because I could buy anything I wanted to eat!

(said so seriously...like "duh, wouldn't everyone?")

A strange blankie

Dear C,

You have had a small blanket  in your crib from very early on in your precious life.

Our parenting experience has taught us to choose ONE blanket to put in the crib, and to buy TWO copies of it.

So, we put a small blanket in your crib, knowing that you would become attached to something.  We were just directing your choice by limiting it to ONE blanket option.  Most importantly, it was a blanket that we had TWO copies of!

Of course, in spite of our due diligence, freewill has proved us wrong.  (*wink)

Instead of wanting to snuggle with a blanket to go to sleep, you prefer your bed sheet.  You somehow rub the sheet till you can grip a small fold of it.  You take that little fold in your tiny hand and then put the thumb of that same hand in your mouth.

 IMG_4746

Yes, it is a strange sight, and we tried our best to get a shot of it, but the crib bars blocked you.

IMG_4748

So, your blankie was chosen and we gave in on the rest.

We have now given you BOTH of the blankets that were supposed to be your blankies and we tossed in your Trudy blanket* a little over a year ago.

We knew we had been foiled.

You enjoy and love your Trudy blanket the most.  The two copies of the blanket we selected sit untouched in a corner of your crib.

But your blankie, the one that helps you fall asleep at night, is your crib sheet.

You are definitely an original, my boy!

Love,

Mommy

*Trudy blanket – Each of my kids have a blanket made by my Aunt Trudy.  They began calling them “Trudy blanket” which was shortened to “Trudy”.  You’ll hear D often say, “I need my Trudy”.  We love it and just call them all “Trudy blankie”.

Loving their Legos

My boys LOVE their legos.

Me?  I have a love/hate thing going for the tiny colored rectangles.

Part of the problem is the way my boys play with them.

They don’t build or create structures.

They dump each and every single one out on the floor in a big pile.  Then they use them as their “trash” to dig and dump and move around with their trucks.

IMG_4639IMG_4643

It is awfully cute to watch them play together.  They make fabulous sound effects and they have a blast.

I tell myself that one day they WILL build structures and I’ll miss this non-organized chaos of legos.  Because structure building will bring other frustrations.

IMG_4646

So in the meantime, most days, they get away with it.  Because mommy loves the moments when it buys her some peace.

IMG_4651

But there are other days that I know the pile of legos will send me over the edge.

IMG_4647

And on those days I simply hide the container.

Hmmm… I don’t know where those legos went…

Chaos

I have four children.  The oldest is 8 and the youngest is almost 2.

My house is typically chaotic.

It’s creative chaos, but definitely chaos.

IMG_4289

Sofa cushions end up on the floor.

IMG_4306

Children and blankets end up on the floor.

IMG_4292

But in the midst of the chaos is laughter.  And there is dancing, marching, talking, and carrying on.

 IMG_4302

Yes.  It is messy.

Sometimes,  I make a cup of hot tea and leave the room, in an attempt to find a clean, quiet corner of my house.

IMG_4304

Other times, I stay and laugh and take lots of photos!

A new obsession

C (age 22 months) has moved on from begging to play at the sink each day.  He has started to alternate that activity with his new found ability to drive his mother insane in the pantry…

Once again, he pulls over a chair and brings a large mixing spoon…

IMG_4941

Once he is in position, he opens up his favorite container….the popcorn kernels.

IMG_4936

He loves to mix and mix the kernels.  Sometimes he likes to mix a little too hard and kernels go flying all over the place.  Oh it is such fun…FOR HIM.  Not so much for mom.

IMG_4937

Of course, I had to laugh one night when Eric and I decided to make some popcorn and realized we were going to have a bonus side item with it….raisins.
