T (age 5) was in the bathtub. The water had drained because it was time to get out. She was getting out and stood with both feet on the edge of the tub...

Mom: T, don't do that. It is so dangerous. Just step out.

T: Why is it dangerous?

Mom: You are wet and so is the tub. You can slip, fall back, and hit your head. You'd probably end up with a concussion.

T: What is a concussion?

Mom: A bad head injury. That is why you wear a helmet when you ride your bike, so you don't get a concussion.

T: Then I can just wear a helmet when I am in the tub.

*sigh

OR you could step out of the tub in a safe manner.

The kids went with my hubby and parents for Rita's Free Italian Ice on the first day of spring.

Italian Ice wasn't enough for my dad, so he was having ice cream added to his. T (age 5) saw my mom pulling out cash and looked at her and asked, "Grandma, how much does free cost?"

More of Mommy’s Test Subjects

D (age 3) is a great subject to photograph because he is always “doing”.

 IMG_7821

The camera doesn’t distract him at all.  He is a pretty serious fellow when he is involved in an activity.

IMG_7822

You can’t “hear” it, but I can when I look at this shot…it’s the sound that he always makes when he is “busy” in his world.

IMG_7834

There he is, making that noise again.  The kitchen sink is a favorite place for him.

IMG_7836

Of course, getting him to actually look at the camera is a rare feat indeed!

IMG_8008 (1)

He is such a wiggly worm if you are trying to get him to pose.

IMG_8013

And he moves so quickly that you might just miss something in the shot…like his cheek!  But he is still a handsome little guy, no doubt.

I love this one though.  It just really captures him.

IMG_8009

I loved this shot because spring and winter were both present.

IMG_8105

Of course, a little blur to the background really made D pop out!

IMG_8109

Always the thinker when he is working.

IMG_8116

Getting him to actually look at the camera and smile is tough.

Up here, D, the camera is up here!

IMG_8328

Right above you!

IMG_8332

Yep, my serious little guy is not one to pose easily for me.

That makes him quite an interesting subject to photograph in his own way.

Mommy + new camera lens = lots of photos

So, I got a new lens for my camera.  And I have been having lots of fun with it.  My son’s baby book might never have a picture actually put in it, but I assure you that it isn’t for a lack of choices.

Love the look on this little guys face.  IMG_7946

There is something about black and white shots of little people that I just adore.

IMG_8045

Especially when they are wearing contrasting stripes.  That works nicely.

IMG_8050

C likes to chat with me during these sessions.  He has a lot to say.  I believe right now he is thanking me for the camera lens cover that he came across on the floor.

IMG_8053

The lens does a lovely job outside!   Now, what is this child so happy about?IMG_8161 (1)

Oh, it’s is his daddy!

IMG_8165

Daddy makes this little one just crack up like no one else can!

IMG_8147

The lens does a lovely job indoors as well, capturing that precious face!

IMG_8179 IMG_8185

And even daddy, who doubted the lens, had his own fun picture session with C.   C loves this door toy!  Peek-a-boo!

IMG_8200

Without a doubt, outdoors is truly my favorite place to go for photos.  Taking a few moments to study the grass is an important endeavor.

IMG_8223

Lounging around on a blanket in the sunshine works for me too!  And look…he found that camera lens over again!  No, it isn’t really considered a toy, but it seems to work well when I am taking his picture.

IMG_8244

Oh what a precious little face!

IMG_8319

I have a lot to learn about shutter speed and f-stops, but I couldn’t have a cuter 8 month old to practice on.

And yes, I am proudly biased!

D (age 3): When Poppy says, "RAAAA" to me then I will throw a pillow at him.

T (age 5): That is undisgraceful.

K (age 7): Wait. That isn't right. Huh?

Mom: When we use the prefix, "un", it means that something is NOT. So when you say "unkind", you mean someone is NOT kind. I think you mean to say that something is disgraceful. "Undisgraceful" really isn't a word. It would mean that something was NOT disgraceful.

T: God is undisgraceful.

(an excellent use of our made up word)

K's Sunday School teacher was making a point and asked the class what is the most expensive thing that their parents own. The kids were responding with, "house" and "car".

K raised her hand and said, "ME!"

T was eating a lollipop and wasn't sure the flavor...

"It taste like soft ice cream that got hard on the top. Then the bottom tastes like lemon."

(well THAT clears it up)

K (age 7) was doing her dishwasher job one morning. It was her week to do the kids cups and dishes. As she was trying to organize them in the drawer...

K: T doesn't organize this. Look how messy it is.

(moves some things around)

K: Mom. I think it is time to give some dishes away.

(cause that is how we roll in this house...too many dishes to organize then give some away)

T was working on her Explode the Code spelling check at the end of the unit. I was folding laundry behind her and I heard her saying to herself, "S*ex. S*ex. No."

She turned to me and said, "I put an e in the word and spelled s*ex. I need to switch it to an i. That is a six not s*ex."

The whole thing was so funny to me, but of course, she had absolutely no clue what word she had written, so she was just chatting away about her work.

My Encourager

Dear K (age 7),

Without a doubt, God has given you the gift of encouragement.  We see it so regularly expressed in your actions and words.

Last week, you wrote notes for every teacher and student that are in your classes at co-op on Friday.   I heard from more than one person about how precious your note was to them or their child that day.

You said just what someone needed to hear in more than one instance that day.   Even as a little girl, you are an amazing vessel for His love to everyone who comes along your path!

Notes and letters from you to members of our family are quite common.  You are gifted with a encouraging spirit and I am so thankful you share your gift with your family.  On Tuesday night, I was tutoring and didn’t get home until you were in bed.  Your words lifted my spirits when I got home that night.

I went up to my room and my bed was made and this note was sitting on it:

10 03 k note to dadmom

Next to it was one that Daddy had clearly found during the same evening:

 10 03 k note to mom

But you didn’t stop there.  There was a note for your family.  It is so precious that you specifically mentioned each person!

10 03 k note to family

And you never forget your sister.

10 03 k note to ta

10 03 k note to tb

Or your brother, D (age 3)

 10 03 k note to D

(The picture is the two of you with “a bag of rocks”.)

Interestingly enough, you are almost finished memorizing Romans 12.  This passage contains a wonderful description of the Body of Christ working together, using their individual gifts.  Verse 8 commands, “…if it is encouraging, let him encourage…”

You are doing this my dear child.  God is using you to build up our family and encourage the hearts of those around you.  May He use your words to build up His kingdom in ways we can’t even imagine!

Love,

Mommy

We were in the midst of reading a Psalm during our family night when T (age 5) asked me, "How will I find Chloe in heaven?"

(Chloe is her friend who moved to Germany about 2 months ago)

The girls give presentations as part of their homeschool curriculum this year. They usually practice for 1-2 nights before the "big day". D (age 3) has gotten into this activity and likes to give a presenation also.

The last time he ran around the room and then fell over. We all clapped!

For the next few days he continually asked, "Can we go do presentations?"

Over the weekend, we had breakfast guests and he exclaimed, "Let's go do presentations!"

National Aquarium Field Trip: Jellies

IMG_7712 Oh my goodness.  I had a blast at the aquarium photographing the jellyfish.  It was the first time I had my Canon Rebel XS with me on this field trip.  I had the standard 18-55mm lens on it because it was the only one I owned at the time.  Now, I am only a beginner, but the right camera does amazing stuff!

I love these photos, but  I don’t know what to do with them…yet.

I think I’ll  frame them somewhere.  They just begged, “FRAME ME!”.  Maybe in the kids bathroom because there is an “underwater” theme.

I would also love to find a contest to enter…just have to find one.

 IMG_7681IMG_7684 IMG_7686 IMG_7690 IMG_7709 IMG_7710

Hard to believe that I had as much fun photographing these jellyfish as I do when I take shots of my kids.

Of course, the kids really are cuter…
