You are only young once

It was a simple trip to the local village center. The plan was to throw pennies in the fountain and have a snack at the bagel place.

After depositing $.50 into the fountain, we headed indoors for our snack. We each picked our favorite muffin and shared them all around. Then we went outside to sit by the fountain and relax.

Of course, the kids decided to walk around a bit.

It was T (age 4) who spotted it first...

a huge puddle right in the midst of the village center.

Apparently the drain wasn't working properly so the recent rain had pooled in a very very large puddle.

She looks at me. I know what she is thinking and I begin to consider the options.

Yes, it is true that our plan didn't include soaking wet children in the car.

Yes, that water is probably dirty. No adult would play in there.

Yes, my children are in their clothing complete with shoes and socks.

Yes, people began giving me strange looks. But others smiled and enjoyed the show.

Yes, I began to realize you are only young once. Adults don't splash in dirty puddles without a care.

Yes, their imaginations took off as they made boats with sticks and leaves.

Yes tends to be more fun than No.

Yes creates more silly memories than No.

Yes, D (age 2) sat down right smack dab in the middle of that puddle.

Yes, they went home wet. Soaked to the core.

Yes, they will need baths.

But, yes, it was well worth it and I enjoyed every moment of watching them as they ignored the rules of polite society!

Yes, I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

fun fun fun! I have received some strange looks for letting my kids do that kinda thing. When you see the pure joy on your kids faces though, it is so worth it. The car eventually dries out. No biggie. :)

Way to go fun Mama!

This is one reason I love Crocks! Looks like fun! I would do that anyday over letting them play with sand - I can't stand sand cuz it gets into eyes and then we hav very unhappy kiddos. But a water puddle can be awesome! Great pics!

I just found your blog. As a mom of 4, sometimes "no" is an easier route, but look at this - "yes" is so worth it! Thanks for the reminder.

LOVE it! That's what happens when you have many children, I think. You begin to relax and realize that life is happening each moment. They may no longer be in matching clothes or have newish looking shoes or even get a bath until much later in the day, but those things don't outweigh the benefits of discovering with each other in the now. Oh, yes, and mom is much too tired to get up and make them stop:)
