Say YES more than NO.

I try not to fight battles with my children unless it is necessary. I remind myself to say YES more often than I say NO. Even when I just feel like saying no because their idea is about to create more work for me...

Mom, can Dad turn on the sprinkler for us?

Girls, you'd have to get bathing suits on.

We'll wear our clothes, mom. Can we?

(Now I'd rather avoid the work of wet clothing, but I remind myself to say yes...)

OK girls. Go ahead. I'll get some towels to put by the door.

Mom, can we have umbrellas?

Sure guys.

After putting the towels by the door, I went outside to watch. And then I grabbed the camera. It was a memory in the making...

Yes, T (age 4) is in her Easter Dress. But she is one happy clam. Just check her out on the sidebar. That photo was taken on this day and she is having a ball!

Boy did D (age 18 months at the time) have a ball...

And he was NOT going to be left out of the umbrella fun.

Something about those sprinklers that go back and forth is just fun.

And I am reminded that many times the best memories are made because Mom said, "Yes".

totally agree. Spontanious fun is where it's at.

My son asked me this morning if he could try juggling knives after seeing it on youtube. A pack of band-aids later and he's doing great.

Writing this on my phone from the ER since my youngest daughter wanted to try the jump over a moving car trick. She was so close!

Thanks for the challenge Mary! I need to remember to "Yes" to my children more than no too. But the older they get the BIGGER the request gets :-(

Have a great day!

Just an FYI from the author...Dana Hanna happens to be my brother. He is sarcastic, obviously.

Clearly, he didn't read my link up there about fighting battles with my children because I do ask myself:
is it illegal? immoral? DANGEROUS?

Perhaps he'll visit the link and learn a parenting trick or two ;)

Yes. I do love my brother. Welcome to his humor.

Adorable! And yes you are right, saying yes is fun. The clean up will be there no matter what, you may as well have fun memories to go with it.

Thanks for the reminder to have fun.

I LOVE this post! (And your brother's comments too!)

This is something I try to remember regularly - I want my NOs to actually be meaningful, and a little mess is not the end of the world. Here's to lots of memories!

A great challenge for me, as I often have the No said before the question has even been asked.

Thanks for sharing.

(and I have brothers like that too!!)

I need this reminder. The little extra effort on mom's part goes a very long way in the lives of little ones.

You're brother cracks me up!

I love your blog's new look- very nice.

That's great - good for you. It's convicting sometimes when we realize how many "no"s we issue just because we don't want to be bothered. I think I learned from a Douglas Wilson tape many years ago to "say yes as much as possible."
Your kids are blessed b/c you did!
