BUT, before you wonder why on earth we bought such a house...we bought it for SPACE! We are leaving a townhouse and will now have space like this:
Do I love that 1980's kitchen? NO.
Do I love what it will look like in a few years when I am done with it? YEP! (you gotta have vision)
Am I loving the fact we'll have a fireplace on the other side of that same open area? YEP!
So let me give you the million dollar tour of my soon to be home. First you'll see why we need some design help. (shameless plug for Friday...come on back and help us out!)
The walls are mainly white. This leaves us a clean canvas to design..jpg)
Now, I said they are mainly white. Don't try to wipe the smudge in this shot off your screen. It's on the wall in the house, not your computer..jpg)
Of course, there is the occasional hole in the wall..jpg)
Or in the door. Isn't it a shame that they ruined a perfectly good 1980's dark fake composite door?.jpg)
Luckily it comes with lighting already in the rooms! And as if the light wasn't already hanging low enough...this neat trick lowers it a few more inches so you can knock your head constantly!.jpg)
And the previous owner left his 1980's appliances for us. I wonder what the energy star rating is on this one?.jpg)
*I must add here that God's provision is SO GOOD! The couple that bought our house has offered to bring their own washer, dryer, and refrigerator so that we can bring ours to our "new" home! (more story on this later)
Of course, the best part of this home is definitely the hot tub. The previous owner built a room around a hot tub. Inside the house. In the basement. In the middle of the basement, leaving unfinished area around THREE side of this room.
I guess you could call it a hot tub peninsula!
And, just so you could rinse off quickly, he provided a teeny tiny shower up in the wall and a toilet and sink right there in the middle of the room. WOO HOO!.jpg)
Needless to say...anyone want a hot tub?
As I look around the house, I admit I am a bit overwhelmed. I am thankful we have parents willing to take us in for a month so we can prepare this home for our family.
Then, in the midst of that overwhelmed feeling, I look around outside at the neighborhood we are going to be a part of. Immediately, I know that this is the place for us! We can't wait.
This is a picture of the yard outside of D's soon to be bedroom window. My kids keep asking to go to this playground..jpg)
Mental note: Must meet that neighbor ASAP! Maybe she'll babysit while we paint!

I must tell you, my chandelier was MUCH fancier than yours! It had at least 40 pyramid-shaped pieces of hanging plastic! LOL.
And, um, yes - we totally want a hot tub! Though we might run into issues with shipping it...
ROFL re. hot tub situation.
The house has potential, Mary. Can't wait to see the final product.
This is going to be fun!! You are not only going to make this house a home, you are going to make it a beautiful one!! I'll be watching:)
I think you need to get your realtor involved in this project. If I remember correctly, she has amazing taste.
Maybe you could write HGTV to be on one of their shows ;-)
This is a big undertaking, but it can also be fun. The memories you & your hubby will make will be priceless, and make the home all the more special.
I showed this to Fred and he says it's time for you to start a home improvement blog! :)
You can do it, it's going to be great! Lots of potential!
I'd start by replacing the chandelier ;-)
Oh how I love a fixer upper! It's amazing what a little paint (and new kitchen cabinets) can do.
I LOVE the house. Total potential. Maybe I'll just have to come to YOU and share ideas b/c God knows I'm not going to have time to find pictures, scan them, and then email them to you. We're in the middle of HUGE house cleaning/yardsale prep.
but I hope loads of people give you good ideas! mwah!
Ahh, yeah. I think you are going to be a tad bit busy. We had a fixer upper too (although it has taken us more or less 5 years to get it into good shape, then again we're a bit slow). Anyway, it has been fun to see before and after pictures, and think "we made it what it is today!"
PS We had the same exact chandelier for 7 years and just got around to getting rid of it a month ago!
I think one of the best compliments we ever got on our house was that we had infused our personality into every room 9thankfully it was someone who liked our personalities). While it can be overwhelming, just think of how "you" it will be once you are finished. I've already taken pictures of my two favorite rooms in the house to share for Friday. :)
After seeing the kitchen makeover in your townhome - I know that this place will look so wonderful in no time!! And it will be home!! YIPPEE!
So happy and delighted for you. I look forward to you taking us step by step on it's beautiful progression into the home you will make it.
Susan
Oh to have all that room! One of these days...
Anyway, I haven't been on your blog for awhile. I always start at the top of my bloglines list and then I don't get all the way through and then the next time I start at the top again and so on and so on. I need to remember to start where I left off!
I hope you have fun getting the house ready!
Imagine how bored we'd all be if the houses we moved into were instantly perfect! What would be left to do? Our house was originally a foreclosure, too. But like yours, the work it needed was mostly cosmetic. We've been here 3 years and though things are "fixed" we still haven't finished our "design." Probably never will.
I look forward to seeing your house become an expression of your family as you make it your home.
congrats!
you do have your work cut out for you, huh? i look forward to some after pictures. having a blank canvas can be fun and exciting.
so, are you keeping the hot tub? if you took it out, would the shower and toilet seem out of place? like i said, looking forward to those "after" shots.
Love the chandelier! It looks like the perfect house! Good thing you have vision - I don't and would be bumping my head for years b4 much got done!
Can't wait to see pictures as it progresses!
Andrea
What an exciting time! We had a VERY fancy chandelier when we moved into this house. Brynne thought it was GORGEOUS... a bijillion pieces of glass. U-G-L-Y.
Switching out your doors will be expensive, but it will make SUCH a difference. Can't wait to follow the progress! :)
BTW, I want to do the thinking differently tag... I'm thinking on it. :) I loved the idea behind it.
OK, here's my input. Dark colors make rooms look smaller. Light colors make them look bigger. Warm is nice, too much warm is stuffy.
and HEY! The 80s weren't that bad!! Try moving into a house decorated in the 70s!!
oh, and I forgot. Sawsall takes care of hot tubs! I should show you where ours USED to be.........
The 80's was a good decade for brass, wasn't it? I'm embarrassed to say we have all original light fixtures still in our house and it was built in 1989. I bet your new home will be looking GOOD after you get your hands on it! The hot tub just cracks me up because you can say "and this is where the hot tub used to be" every time you give future tours.
that railing for nothing (???) between the dining/living area is rather lovely, Mary. :)
Our house was a major time warp from the 80's when we bought it. Mauve and blue carpeting, LOUD flowery huge curtains, blue metal blinds...and oh, I can't forget the dark mauve TRIM all over the house. Nothing a whole lotta elbow grease can't take care of (and a little money too...).
Can't wait to see how it all turns out for you. Hopefully I'll get something posted on my site for you. I've been collecting ideas for our new house, so I'll see what I can come up with.
Ummm, I admire your vision? I know your husband is handy and you two will have fun working on it together and it will be your own.
I think it will actually be fun! And I cannot wait to start seeing your 'after' photos!
I think it is going to be such a wonderful home! I like the layout! That is so great that you get to NOT LIVE in it while you prepare it! So much easier!
~Johanna!
