Day in DC

Washington DC has got to be one of the coolest cities in the US. It is filled with museums, historical monuments, constant events, and so much more. The best part is that it is all FREE! Unfortunately, with little children who need to rest and nap, we rarely get time to explore these places anymore.

So, last year my husband and I decided we would start sending our kids AWAY from the house for a weekend, while we stuck around to explore DC and various other close by cities.

Our time in DC this year did NOT disappoint!

We made a stop at the National Cathedral on our way to DC. We had never been (yes, only 30 mins away and we have never been...sad, I know). It was so awesome. We loved it and can't wait to go back. We took the 45 min tour and then relaxed on a bench in the gardens. Of course, we can't wait to bring the kids to their family day. (funny how much you miss them even though you love the weekend without them...)

Then we headed to downtown DC to the National Mall (no, sadly, it is not shopping). We walked toward the Mall and decided to just stumble upon a place. That place ended up being the United States Botanic Garden. (had no clue one existed...did you?) The outdoor area was a bit dry...we haven't gotten much rain. The indoor gardens were great. They had various rooms with different vegetation and even a children's garden, which of course, we checked out!

Then we left and walked up to the Capitol Building. I had never done this. These days, you can't walk all the way up. They have changed a lot of security rules, but we did get half way and the view of the Mall and the monuments was well worth the hike up the stairs.

Next, we decided we would wander over to the Air and Space Museum. There was an exhibit on display, Ttreasures of American History. It was supposed to be at the American History museum, but that one is closed for renovation, so it was moved.

Boy, am I glad it was here. We waited in a short line to get into the exhibit. Wanna guess the first thing I laid my eyes on???

Abraham Lincoln's Hat. Yes, the very one that was on his head. It was sitting in a case right next to Thomas Edison's lightbulb. WOW! We really still have this stuff!

Next thing I knew, I was staring into the eyes of the original, the one and only Kermit the Frog! "Somewhere you'll find it, a rainbow connection...the lovers, the dreamers, and me" (anyone else singing along?)

This collection also had Dorothy's ruby slippers, R2D2, C3PO, Ray Charles' glasses, Albert Einstein's pipe, The 60 minutes stop watch, ... the list goes on. It was truly a collection of national treasures. (hence the name...)

Of course, I couldn't help but wonder, "Does Carrie Bradshaw's laptop count as a National Treasure?"

After a nice dinner downtown, we headed to Georgetown for dessert. I had a HUGE deep chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a waffle bowl...yum! Perfect ending to our time in DC.

Sounds like a wonderful time and a great way to get away!

Living so close, I always hated going there for fieldtrips - I think I am going to have to go down again and try to pay more attention this time! :) So glad you had a great time!

I'm so glad y'all had so much fun. I lived there for 4 years (left in 2005). Honestly, it's not my favorite place in the world. We do do alot while there, but I didn't enjoy the fast paced world we had to live in.

Yep. Good ol' DC. Loads of fun stuff to do!! Next time we plan the trip, I'm rereading this link!MY favorite is the zoo. And obviously that's because our kids usually come with us. (we live further away than you do). since you live up that way, been to the Baltimore Aquarium? We're hoping to make a trip in the near future. Any tips? or warnings? :)

Sounds like you had a great time! I know what you mean about missing your kids when you love the time without them. I've felt that way this month!

Mary,

My daughter and I were reading your post about DC and Lincoln's hat. She immediately said, "I want to go THERE." Then we got down to the R2D2 spot and she for sure wants to go now. Thanks for the inspiration.

You described a dream tour!! I would love to come to Washington D.C.

Someday! If you ever travel to the Vietnam War Memorial, please take a picture of my dad's name. I had a chance to travel about 100 miles to see the traveling war memorial, but not the national one.

So let me know if you ever do so!

Thanks for the great getaway!!! I enjoyed *going* with you!

I've only been to DC once and would love to go again. My favorite building was the Library of Congress. You must see it if you have not. It is absolutely the most beautiful building I have ever seen. I stood and gazed around and tears came to my eyes. I wrote in the visitor guest book "I never expect to see anything more beautiful until I get to heaven.".

We didn't even plan to visit it and stopped to ask a policeman directions to the Supreme Court and as he was directing us he said "You'll go right by the Library of Congress and you must stop and see it. So many people don't and it's the most beautiful building here." We took his advise and I am so thankful we did.

Sorry I wrote such a long comment but you can tell I get excited about this!!

What a fun trip and within your reach too! No travel necessary! I am glad you were able to get away and see the sites. I hope to one day follow suit and see those sites myself!

Blessings.

That is a great idea! Great Picture too! Last time we were up there, we saw the same stuff the hat, the shoes, Kermit the frog was my favorite!

When Roy and I go out with out the kids, we love the alone time, but find ourselves saying, ahhh...the kids would Love this, ahhh...we gotta bring them next time. Then when we bring them, we end up saying, wasn't this so much more peaceful WITHOUT THE KIDS!!! lol

TOO FUNNY!!!!
